To me fun and work were two concepts that couldn’t mix, like oil and water. Fun had no place at work, and vice versa. I would go as far as saying that I saw it as completely unprofessional. Yes, you heard me. Having fun at work was simply unprofessional.

I couldn’t believe how some people could come to work and have time to have a giggle, make jokes in meetings, organize cupcake days, or even pull pranks on colleagues. I think that this came from my academic background. Everything related to university or work had to be serious, otherwise it was proof that you were not serious about your achievements.

Thankfully, I have since changed my outlook. Observing colleagues have little moments of fun I understood that for most of them, it was a way to keep calm under pressure, make a relaxed work environment, and create team spirit. All of this is very healthy. It is also very productive.

Of course, you can have too much of a good thing, so here I am not talking about using work as your personal playground but specifically finding ways to enjoy some aspects of your 9 to 5 hustle and have some fun with it.

So yes, I am all for having some fun at work!
